Following his graduation with honors from both Temple University and Penn State, The Dickinson School of Law, where he was an editor of the Dickinson Law Review, Mr. Coren became associated with the Philadelphia firm of Cohen, Shapiro, Polisher, Shiekman & Cohen in its litigation department. In 1981, Mr. Coren joined Kittredge, Kaufman & Donley, where he became a partner in 1985. In 1989, Mr. Coren became a founding shareholder of KCR. Mr. Coren has always handled diverse and complex civil litigation in both federal and state courts. Mr. Coren has settled or tried to verdict numerous cases resulting in a nine figure recovery, numerous eight figure recoveries, and total recoveries exceeding $200 million. Mr. Coren has been repeatedly recognized as a Pennsylvania “Super Lawyer” in Philadelphia Magazine, and has been selected for inclusion in the 2010 and 2011 editions of The Best Lawyers in America.
Examples of matters handled:
- Recovered $100 million settlement of aiding and abetting claims brought by a Chapter 7 trustee of a failed sub-prime lender against several Wall Street investment banks that had extended warehouse financing and had served as underwriters for the failed lender’s securitization of sub-prime mortgages. The case – filed in 2006 – was one of the first to come to trial in state court arising out of the melt-down of the sub-prime mortgage industry;
- Recovered $20 million on behalf of Chapter 7 trustee in claims against the Debtor’s former attorneys;
- Recovered $16.5 million settlement on behalf of Chapter 7 trustee in claims against the Debtor’s former officers and directors;
- Representing Chapter 7 trustee in prosecuting claims against the auditor, lenders and others arising out of the collapse of sub-prime lender;
- Recovered $24 million judgment, including $7 million punitive damage award, against national bank on claims for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, fraudulent and negligent misrepresentation;
- Recovered eight figure verdict in breach of contract case involving dispute over programming and other rights with respect to a television station;
- Recovered eight figure settlement on behalf of Chapter 7 Trustee in lender liability litigation;
- Recovered fraudulently transferred business and $3 million on behalf of two Chapter 7 Trustees; prevailed on claims of fraudulent transfer and breach of fiduciary duty against individual debtor, his wife and various entities;
- Recovered $1.6 million judgment on behalf of Chapter 11 Debtor;
- Recovered $6 million settlement on behalf of Chapter 11 Trustee in claims for breach of fiduciary duty, fraudulent transfer and deepening of the insolvency against shareholders, former officers, directors and others; settled claims against national bank and recovered $500,000 for the Estate and subordination of lender's $4 million claim;
- Successfully represented senior law enforcement official in civil rights claims against police department; recovered substantial money damages and injunctive relief;
- Successfully represented several law enforcement officials in civil rights claims against state agencies and government officials; recovered $2 million and permanent injunctive relief;
- Successfully defended claims of patent infringement and obtained declaration invalidating plaintiff's patent; and
- Successfully represented originator of concept for television show against defendant alleged to have misappropriated plaintiff's ideas.
Mr. Coren is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, the United States Tax Court, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. He is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia Bar Associations. |
